Unit 6: Determining Base Pay - Method Overview
Assume you are in charge of job evaluation for your organization and that you have been given the following jobs to evaluate and determine their overall worth to the organization:
Recruiter
Executive Assistant Cashier
Accounting Clerk Administrative Assistant
How would you rank them from the most valuable job to the least valuable job? What are your reasons for placing them in that order, i.e., why is your top job your top job etc.? How comfortable are you in defending your decision to the incumbents, if challenged? Without full job descriptions, how much was the decision impacted by your own perceptions of the job and perhaps people you know that actually do that kind of work? What could you do to make your decision more defendable?
I would like to rank job according to its importance. I assign the most valuable job at the top and a least valuable job at last.
1 • Executive Assistant
• Recruiter
• Accounting Clerk
• Administrative Assistant
• Cashier
2 The reason behind this placement is the importance of the job. I have placed Executive Assistant at first because this post requires a lot of skills, knowledge, and experience to perform. Moreover, leadership and managerial qualities are required to perform their duty. I have put a Cashier job at last because they have to not perform multitasking and their interaction with other employees is less. Not any specific qualification is required to perform this duty.
3 I am comfortable with my decision to the incumbents because my decision gives value to a job according to its skills, qualification, knowledge required. Their pay scale is also accordingly to their rank of job. The top raked job gets a higher salary and the least ranked job gets less salary.
4 It is very difficult to define a job without a job description because bias can arise. Duties and responsibility can be described in the job description. In this way, the job can be easily ranked and even employees will be clear about the job.
5 To make my decision more defendable I will compare my job with other jobs. I will also compare the required skills, knowledge and experience for the job. Every employee's performance will also be compared, so this way their work will be clear.
