Assignment:
Write a 750 to 1000 word essay comparing and contrasting Durkheim's The function of crime , Weber's the characterstics of bureucracy , and Marx's the manifesto of communist party , i.e. structural-functionalism, interpretive method, and social-conflict analysis. Feel free to compare articles from the textbook or Brightspace Readings to deepen your comparison. Be sure to explain which of the three approaches or theorists is most persuasive in explaining society. If you need to refer to additional sources, you can use additional readings from Brightspace or the textbook. Your essay should read like a single, uninterrupted paper.
Remember, citations should not come from the course's PowerPoint slides and will not be counted as part of the required 10-15 citations. Each citation for a direct quote must have the author's name, year of publication, and date, for example (Altoriki, 1994, p. 30) and for the paraphrased (Thompson, 1996).
Structure of Essay:
1. Introduction and overall thesis
- Capture the reader's attention - write a hook sentence. Generate the interest of your reader (cite whenever necessary) while stating the seriousness of the problem you will address.
- Give background information and the context of your topic.
- Explain/define/answer: the response to the question or the overall focus of the essay, overall thesis statement. For example: "This paper argues that A's explanation provides us with a better understanding of the role that culture plays in shaping society than B's ideas.
- Describe the structure and organization of the essay so that your reader knows what to expect. For example, this essay will provide three arguments and counterarguments to demonstrate the superiority of A over B.

Body Paragraphs
To present your arguments, divide the essay into three paragraphs (see below 3 arguments), each discussing a point or idea. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence that introduces the main idea. Provide evidence, examples, or arguments to support the topic sentence (must cite). Use transitions to ensure a smooth flow between paragraphs and ideas. Use relevant quotes or examples from to support your explanation.

Conclusion

APA formatting:
The paper must have the title page according to the APA style. The essay should have a table of contents indicating page numbers of the major sections. Use font and margin: 12 points, Arial or Times New Roman, 1-inch margin, and double-spaced (must).
