Corning opens this chapter with a critique of capitalism which he characterizes as rejecting distributive justice and failing to meet the basic needs of society. What are the basic beliefs or ideals of capitalism? Do you agree with Corning that capitalism as currently practiced does not deliver on its promises? Corning is calling for a public philosophy based on meeting three basic requirements of human nature and human society: basic needs, equity, and reciprocity. To what extent are these requirements being met in our country today? Give specific examples.
