13-14th centuries were one of the most catastrophic ages in our history. Azerbaijani states except Shirvansahs couldn't show their appearance in that period. We can see Atabegs, some city-states as a fragile political body before the campaigns. Azerbaijani people faced with 4 destructive campaigns only in 18 years (1221-1239). 2 of them were made by the most brutish warriors of the largest land empire- Great Mongol Khanate. The other was by Khipchaks, nomadic turkic tribe which was in alliance with foes of Azerbaijan. Jalal al-Din Khwarazmshah was the most hated person in the years of 1225-1231, because of damage to economic productiveness and corrupted political system. Shirvanshahs needs to be appreciated for its diplomatic capacity. The state found the way to exist even in the case of vassalage and paying huge amount of kharaj, when the Azerbaijani lands were war field of several powerful states.
