Question: Have you gone through an ERP implementation? If so, please share your experience. There are two key questions: how painful was the implementation experience, including what prior processes had to be changed, and what gains were realized afterward.

I like to characterize the implementation process in terms of Greek mythology and the story of Procrustes. Procrustes forced travelers to fit into a particular bed, stretching their limbs if they were too short and lopping them off if they were too long. So, too, does an ERP: processes must be reengineered to fit!
