Assignment:

The controversial British documentary Boys Alone documents a social experiment in which 10 boys were left without adult supervision for 5 days.

Psychologists are called upon all the time to provide expert formulations and commentary on everyday affairs and on the research findings of others. Imagine that you have been called upon to provide your opinion on what transpired in this social experiment in your answers to the following questions:

1. How would you characterize the methodological design of this social experiment? State 3 limitations of this research documentary.

2. As you are aware, there are different types of validity. Pick one type, define it, and evaluate this social experiment with respect to that type of validity.

3. When you ask people about their thoughts on the most important "findings/conclusions" regarding human behavior that can be drawn from this documentary, there is considerable variation in their impressions. Reflect on what you believe are the most important conclusions that can be gleaned from this research. State 3 of them. For each of these 3 conclusions:

(a) Indicate the key observations you noted in the video which led you to formulate your conclusions. Be specific.

(b) Indicate whether your conclusions are grounded within a particular psychological theory/theories. Drawing from your knowledge of many psychological theories/models over the past three years as psychology undergraduates (e.g. from social, developmental, biological psychology etc.) state how your conclusions might fit within a particular theoretical framework.
