How different was 1950s marriage and family life from what had come before, and from what came after?

Note Stephanie Coontz's characterization of the postwar patterns of gender and family roles as "The Way We Never Were"--that is, this era was a huge, strange outlier in the general patterns of American social history. Look at all the ways gender roles, marriage, families, etc. were different.
