Essay: Federalism is one of the central characteristics of the U.S. government. What is the nature of the relationship that exists between the federal and state governments today? What factors led to balance of power that exists between the federal and state governments in the United States?

Recently, several conservative think tanks and candidates have advocated giving more power to the states (and less to the federal government). What would the advantages and disadvantages of such a realignment be? Would policy outcomes change? If they would change, please describe the changes. Finally, is Federalism superior to a unitary form of government where power resides exclusively in the central government?
