Sam has worked hard to improve his job skills through personal study. He hopes to use his knowledge of computer programming to solve several data-management problems in his department, which deals in ICT products. The company generally encourages personal development in job-related areas, and it has a history of promoting employees who demonstrate this form of personal enterprise. Sam believes he can obtain a promotion if his performance improves through providing solutions to any programming problems that may arise.
Derrick works in Sam's office and is extremely skilled in the tasks associated with day to day operations of the company. He has not pursued outside personal development opportunities.
