Characteristics of religions

Assignment Help Management Theories
Reference no: EM133246311

This is to be done during week 2.

  • After reading Chapter 2 "Talking About Religion" :  Apply the 'Characteristics of Religions' discussed on pages 12-15 to your own experience (or someone you know - sometimes that is easier to examine critically)
  • Examine your life and activities for examples that could fit into the 6 areas.
  • Describe these examples and try to figure out why they are part of your experience. For example where do your ideas about ethics come from, what influenced the adoption of a behavior, why is a particular place to important to you (and what does it do for you: like sitting next to a quiet stream with a phone off); why and how do you accept certain myths and legends (like - all Canadians can play hockey or survive in the winter); who influenced and why about doctrines (like - Canadians are polite people and Canadians invented UN Peacekeeping); how does sharing certain rituals 'bind you to others' (like lining up for Starbucks, or attending a funeral, or graduating from school - and sitting through that looooong ceremony )?  Note how the text describes the impact and purpose of Experiences & Emotions on p 15 as an example of analysis of your examples.
  • These do not need to be sports related. {see the paragraph on p15 just before "why is religion so difficult to talk about" for other identities}   Some people might use popular culture (Trekkies - Star Trek; or some other collective base of fans); others might use daily life as their examples (like the ritual on page 14 of turning on lights, making coffee, turn on computer, check email...); if a religion is part of your real lived experience, then you can use that as well; others might have some combination of these types of characteristic activities and ideas and lifestyles.  This exercise should take you an hour or so to really think about and list what in your life might fit into the 6 characteristics in this chapter.
  • The content is not being graded for a specific set of examples - this is a self-reflection and application of the concepts so that as we look at the various religions this term, we can examine them in a more analytical fashion with some consistency.
  • Submit this in the Assignments link.  (full marks for a good attempt to both list and explain/analyze the list). two or three examples for each characteristic is sufficient.
