Problem: Mount Rainier is considered the most potentially dangerous volcano in the United States. What other volcanoes in the Cascade and Aleutian chain share some of the characteristics of Rainier that could seriously effect the well being of communities near them, regional air travel, and the economy if an eruption or other event were to occur? Predicting an eruption is very difficult because they can be triggered by many different factors. What is being done to monitor these volcanoes to understand the likelihood of an event? Is it enough or is futile effort?
