Assignment:
The creature in Frankenstein is the first being in his situation. However, he was made from human parts and is largely influenced by humans. So does that make him human too or is he a "monster" or something else? Many questions abound: What characteristics define what it means to be human? What is a monster? Do we need to include both mental and physical characteristics in our definition of "human"?
For your assignment, you will identify characteristics of "human nature," evaluate whether the creature meets them and determine the big ideas that are associated with the creature being human or non-human.
Step 1: Locate and read at least three online sources that address what defines human nature. (The websites don't have to necessarily be extremely formal, but use your best judgment to evaluate their credibility.) On your paper, identify the title and URL of each source (you can abbreviate the URLs if necessary). Then, list at least three points about human nature that you gleaned from each source.
Step 2: Reviewing ideas you thought of on your own and what you found online, identify five characteristics that you believe best encompass what it means to be human. On the template, write each characteristic, identify whether or not the creature meets it and then provide a properly cited quotation from the novel for support.
Written Assignment
Step 3: Make a final assessment of whether you believe the creature could be identified as "human" or not (and if not, how would you categorize him?). Write at least 400-words that summarize how you arrived at your conclusion and express what you think are the takeaway messages/concerns/ideas of the novel if we are to think of the creature as either human or non-human.
