Neumann's description of the evolving threat environment reveals a change in the characteristics of extremism in contemporary society. Historically, organized groups with overt ideologies, like white supremacists, have been closely linked to extremism and terrorist attacks. Neumann notes, however, that many of the participants in recent terrorist incidents, especially at the Capitol uprising, were not formally affiliated with such organizations. Rather, a lot of participants were driven by a strong sense of political loyalty, in this case to Donald Trump, and were prepared to use violence because they thought it was a justifiable way to achieve their goals.
