Bridge-In Online Discussion: Characteristics of a Supportive Helper
Note: Start your online discussions early
Steps
1. Write your own post - You post your response to the discussion questions at least five days prior to the due date. It is important that you post early, so that your classmates have time to read and respond.
2. Respond to other posts - You read your peers' postings and then respond, by name, to at least two students, at least five days prior to the due date. This second step is very important as it gets the conversation started.
o In these two responses, please include one question, so that your peers can respond (this will allow for Step #3).
3. Answer your peers' questions. You answer the questions that are posed to you by at least two classmates in Step #2, by the due date. Ensure that you are including the names of the classmates (peers) whose questions you are answering, in approximately 100 words.
Important: Online discussions are only successful when students choose to participate fully. Keep in mind that these discussions are an important opportunity for you to learn from each other. Please proofread your submissions for correct grammar and sentence structure prior to submitting.
In this Discussion Board, we are going to explore the characteristics of a supportive helper. Picture yourself as a client. Think of some of the problems/challenges/issues you have had to grapple with or are struggling with now. Then, picture yourself dealing with these challenges with a counsellor.
Explain responses to the following questions you may ask yourself in 500 words:
1. What do I want the helper to be like?
2. What are some characteristics of a helper that are important for me to want to share?
3. How will I know I feel like I can trust the helper?
4. How will I know when I am being listened to?
5. How would I want to be treated?
