Assignment:

For this assignment, you are asked to make an argument regarding Poe's discernible impact upon a particular literary genre. To do so, you will need to be able to talk fluently about the essential characteristics of a literary genre, and you will need to be able to trace Poe's contribution (or lack thereof) to the genre by performing a comparison analysis of Poe's work to later works within the genre on our syllabus.

In the first part, you will be working to define what a genre is by pointing to its essential characteristics; to demonstrate this more effectively, you should point to examples from texts within that genre (either Poe's texts or other author's). In accomplishing the second part, which points to Poe's influence in the genre, you should use specific examples to compare Poe's texts to those which came later in order to support an argument that Poe either did or did not greatly influence these authors.

In reaching your conclusion, you are encouraged to make conclusions about how a genre changes over time and in response to cultural circumstances and / or evolving media.
