Question:

Projects selected by senior management are likely to have strategic and organizational focus. Conversely, projects approved by steering committees are cross-functional in nature.

Projects identified by individual or business units are more tactical and have narrow focus. As a characteristic to project identification is the integration of a new software or hardware consistent with the company infrastructure.

Other factors such as risk, cost, duration, and complexity are influence the identification and selection of projects. Project identification and selection consists of three steps.

  • Identifying potential projects
  • Classifying and ranking IT projects
  • Selecting IT development projects

The criteria used to classify and rank a project vary widely with the organization. A typical evaluation is the "value chain analysis" to determine where value is added within primary or support activities, and the cost associated with its implementation.

Project selection is a process that considers both long and short-term projects to achieve business objectives. Various factors can affect the selection if existing systems or business conditions play a role in the decision. Also, the outcomes of a decision can approve or reject the project. Acceptance usually means that a project will be funded and a methodology and project team will be selection. Rejection means that the project will no longer be considered for development.
