Indigenous Literature

Indigenous literature is an important form of expression and storytelling that dates back centuries. It has unique characteristics that set it apart from other forms of literature and provide a unique insight into the culture and history of Indigenous peoples. Indigenous literature can be found in many countries around the world and is an important part of the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples. The three key characteristics of Indigenous Literature are its focus on oral storytelling, its importance in reclaiming Indigenous identity, and its use of symbolism.

The first characteristic of Indigenous Literature is its focus on oral storytelling. Oral storytelling has been integral to Indigenous culture for centuries and is still important in passing down knowledge and beliefs. Examples of this can be seen in the novel Indian Horse by Richard, which tells the story of a young Indigenous man through his oral storytelling (Wagamese, 2018). It is also seen in the poem Brant, a Memorial Ode by Emily Pauline Johnson, which is told orally, using repetition to emphasize the story's main points.

The second characteristic of Indigenous Literature is its importance in reclaiming Indigenous identity. Indigenous literature is often used to reclaim the history and identity of Indigenous peoples, who have been systematically oppressed and denied access to their culture and traditions. This is seen in the article Returning Indigenous Artifacts Part of Reconciliation but Still a Struggle, which recounts the struggles of Indigenous peoples to reclaim their cultural artifacts and stories (InFocus, 2019). This is also seen in Indian Horse, where the main character reclaims his identity through his oral storytelling, and in Brant, a Memorial Ode, which recounts the story of a powerful Indigenous leader (Johnson, 2020).

Symbolism is a powerful tool used by Indigenous authors to convey the struggles and resilience of Indigenous people. In Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese, symbolism conveys the power of the Indigenous culture. The story follows Saul and his journey as he is taken from his family and placed in a residential school. Throughout the story, several symbols represent the struggles of Saul and his people (Wagamese, 2018). The most prominent symbol is the Indian Horse, which symbolizes Saul's strength and resilience in adversity. The Horse is also a symbol of hope and freedom, and its presence in the story reflects the strength of Indigenous people in the face of oppression (Wagamese, 2018).

In Returning Indigenous Artifacts, Part of Reconciliation but Still a Struggle, the author discusses the importance of returning Indigenous artifacts to their rightful owners (InFocus, 2019). This symbolizes the importance of Indigenous people being able to reconnect with their heritage and reclaim their culture. The return of these artifacts symbolizes reconciliation and healing for Indigenous people. It is also a symbol of respect for Indigenous cultures and a recognition of the importance of preserving Indigenous history. In Brant, A Memorial Ode, symbolism is used to convey the power and resilience of the Indigenous people. Johnson uses the image of the "noble deer" to symbolize the courage and strength of the Indigenous people (Johnson, 2020). The deer is also a symbol of freedom, as it is free to roam the land and is protected by nature. Additionally, Johnson uses the image of a "blessing dove" to symbolize the peace and hope of the Indigenous people. This symbolizes the possibility of a better future for the Indigenous people and their ability to overcome hardship and adversity.
