Required Text - Reading of the Chapter on Performance Management

You are the HR manager in a company headquartered in London, England.  The company have just appointed a new project manager for a research team based in Germany.  He is proposing that the company considers him managing the project virtually from his office in London. The other six members of the team are located in Munich. Managing the project from London will solve his personal dilemma. While he welcomes the opportunity to manage the project, he does not want to leave his family and his family does not want to be relocated.  The company has always used PCNs to manage projects of this nature. Usually, these projects run for at least 3 years, however, this project has a six-month timeline. 

The CEO makes the decision that the manager will stay in London and manage the project from there. 

INSTRUCTIONS: 

Discuss the ways in which the project manager working in the virtual context would differ from that of a typical expatriate manager. 

In your discussion, address the variables that affect expatriate performance management and the cross-cultural context for performance management.
