Prompt: What did you think of Shutter Island's portrayal of psychiatrists and other mental health care professionals? Do you agree that psychiatrists are "demonized" (Hopson) in fiction? What evidence do you have to support your response?
I believe that the portrayal of psychiatrist and other mental health professionals is accurate given the time period. The portrayal is very rigid and not common practice anymore but knowing it once was leaves you a little uneasy. This does show the progress we have made in this area of work, for example; Lobotomies and ECT were a common practice when this movie was set. Now these are things that are more looked down upon than practiced. Though "Shutter Island" does raise questions for me about the human mind and what is really real. I agree that psychiatrists are demonized in fiction. Even in the movie "One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest" mental health workers are shown as bad too.
It all comes down to the time period, during the 1950's, treatments were more harsh. A mental health professionals hat I would consider "bad" now in 2024 would be the therapist from the show "Mr. and Mrs. Smith". When the couple started therapy, after their first session the therapist said " The Venmo is posted outside the door." They continued to go to therapy for the rest of the show and at the end the couple blew up her house. I think this was because they felt like she was only after their money rather than their well being. I see this within "Shutter Island" the same, not doing things in your patients well being.
Hopson makes a great point in expressing the importance of changing the negative view of psychiatrist in film. I think there is already a stigma surrounding seeking mental health treatment, this stigma will not be reduced unless the right protocols and call for action is set in place.
