PROJECT TITLE - Changes to UK electrical safety since the turn of the century
PROJECT SYNOPSIS
This is likely to be a desk-top study, relying on literature and case descriptions to identify critical features that have led to changes in electrical safety during this century; and thence, to apply that knowledge to identify potential retro-fit implications for pre-century building stock and estimate the costs of those changes in practical delivery of safety. The principle means to be considered include stand-by power generation, earthing, fuses and RCD protection.
The direction within that framework is essentially up to the student. However, previous undergraduate studies by practicing building services engineers will provide a starting point for the study; and an obvious direction and method for collation of information and analysis. The intellectual challenge is to identify means to apply the current knowledge to be able to predict the costs and balance against the safety (or insurance) benefits across the UK; and to be able to predict for a range of installation types and/or estimate the impact that other mooted changes might have had.
The legislative and regulatory context is essential to this study. It is not just a review of practical changes.
The student needs to have an electrical engineering first degree or a building services engineering first degree
