This week we concentrated on evolution and biodiversity and how species may change through time due to environmental factors. For this extra credit conference, I would like you to think about the following terms, their definitions and how these terms are related to one another:

  • Natural Selection
  • Evolution
  • Adaptive Radiation
  • Adaptation

First, read or reread the section on pages 252-253 in your textbook titled, "Natural Selection," paying specific attention to the material about Darwin's work with Darwin's finches (be sure to look at Figure 13.12). In addition, please read this article from National Geographic about the newest research on Darwin's finches entitled, "Instant" Evolution seen in Darwin's Finches, Study Says." This article also provides more information about Darwin's observations of these birds.

Second, answer the following questions as a response to this conference.

How does the example of Darwin's Finches demonstrate natural selection and evolutionary change?

Be very specific and be sure that you carefully explain the relationship among the terms: natural selection, evolution, and adaptation in your answer. Remember that natural selection, evolution, and adaptation are related terms, but are not the same. Do you know the difference? Can you explain the relationship among the terms?
