It is not uncommon for individuals to experience symptoms of a mental health disorder and attempt to relieve those symptoms on their own through the use of drugs, either prescribed or illicit, and/or alcohol. The term self-medicating is used when substances, drugs or alcohol, are abused to mask symptoms of a mental health issue. Trauma and environmental stressors can result in efforts to self-medicate as well as an individual attempting to mask symptoms of depression and anxiety.
