Many children with exceptionalities face challenges, but we often forget some of the challenges their families might face. Parents of 2E may get comments on their child's diagnosis. There is a lot of miscommunication so they receive "Are you sure...." or "maybe the doctor..." people try to re-diagnose as they don't understand they are twice-exceptional, so they try to "make sense" by coming up with their own. Another challenge the family may struggle with is financial support. When a child has two diagnoses. medical funding can be difficult, which exceptionality outweighs the other? Which one should we focus on, their gifted ability or their disability? It's up to the parents, their medical team, and (if able) the child to make these decisions. The family, but more of the parents themselves may feel as their gifted child is superior to them, as they probably know more, and parents struggle to keep them occupied.
