Core Competency is the capability to apply or use a set of related knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform ''critical work functions'' or task in a defined work setting. Core competency often serve as the basis for skill standards that specify the level of knowledge, skills, and the abilities required for success in the workplace as well as potential measurement criteria for assessing competency attainment.

Imagine a past success story where you demonstrated STRATEGIC PLANNING when supporting individuals with disabilities and narrates the Situation, Actions and Results you underwent to be successful:

Strategic Planning: Involves the ability to plan and follow steps

1. Situation: Describe the issue, challenge, or opportunity you directly encountered. Use enough explanation for your audience to understand why you decided to take action.

2. Actions: Describe the steps you followed to resolve the issue or problem or to capitalize on an opportunity. Give specifics that show you individually took the steps needed to make this scenario successful.

3. Results: Explain what happened as a result of your actions. Concrete, measurable outcomes, such as "four more participants were able to be involved regularly," "we had no more incidences of this sort that summer," or "this saved the agency $XX.XX," are potent indicators of success.
