Global Public mental health

The assignment is made up of two parts:

1. Identify a mental health issue from your home geographical area or a global setting. and use 500 words to critically reflect on this issue (LO5) considering the WHO Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

2. Then, write a 2000-word essay on your chosen mental health issue discussing and critiquing how approaches in global public mental can be used to address the problem (L0 1-4)

Learning Outcome 1: Critically evaluate key mental health concepts and topics.

Learning Outcome 2: Critically examine how social, economic and environmental capital can impact upon the mental health capital of individuals and groups.

Learning Outcome 3: Appraise and critique different approaches to improving mental health and their application in different national contexts.

Learning Outcome 4: Critically appraise political processes used to address the social determinants of mental health inequalities for disadvantaged groups.

Learning Outcome 5: Critically reflect on the key issues and problems facing global mental health, resourcing, and programme delivery.

Assignment guidance

To meet the learning outcomes in Table 1, you will need to include critical analysis and evaluation, and show knowledge and understanding of key concepts in Public Mental Health. The guidance below may help you to meet the learning outcomes for level 7 (Masters) standard of academic work.

Part 1

This section should include a brief introduction to the chosen setting and the mental health challenge. Say where this issue exists and briefly explain why it is a challenge for services to meet people's health needs. Use evidence to support these ideas. Then, use critical reflection to explore how needs are met currently and where you think there are gaps in the service coverage and why. This might be to do with lack of trained staff, lack of understanding of mental health in communities, different beliefs about mental illness. You decide what the issue is and use evidence to explain why it is an issue.
