Question

Michael was diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago. He has seen a CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator) twice. A plan was developed to manage his diabetes through medication, dietary changes, and exercise. He consistently checked his blood sugars before meals. Now, he only checks his blood sugars in the morning before breakfast. Michael has successfully been losing a pound a week for the last 3 months by making changes to his diet and exercising. He and his wife have been eating more whole wheat breads, oatmeal, vegetables, and lean meats such as chicken and turkey. He is thrilled about his weight loss. But, how would you respond when your patient says "it is hard to have a dessert while following a diabetic diet. I would like to have a dessert after dinner or when we go out for a meal."
