Question: Cerebral palsy with inversion tone, left ankle, with quadriplegia. Kay was originally seen in our department 4 weeks ago, as per Dr. Barneswell's order for an AFO. At that time, a negative impression of Kay's lower-left leg was obtained for the fabrication of the brace. Kay returned today to get fit in her new AFO and appeared rather relaxed while casting, resulting in a neutral casting position. For optimal results, the brace is fabricated in 2 degrees of dorsiflexion and trimmed in a leaf-spring style posterior to the malleolus to afford a flexible brace. The foot portion of the brace terminates distal to her toes. The patient's leg was securely held in place with one proximal tibial Velcro strap. The patient's presenting footwear worked well in combination with the AFO. Overall fit was excellent. The family is aware of the signs of skin irritation. Kay's improvement and function will be monitored through Dr. Barneswell. This fitting took 30 minutes. If any questions arise, please feel free to contact us at the Orthotics Department.
