Summarize Alzheimer disease (AD) is listed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 83,494 deaths in 2010. This number is derived from death certificates, which are known to underreport persons dying of dementia. Up to 5 million Americans are currently living with AD dementia, a disease with an average time from diagnosis to death of 3 to 9 years. Given these figures, the burden of mortality attributable to AD dementia is potentially much higher than the numbers posted by the CDC. A valid estimate of the number of deaths attributable to AD dementia would aid assessment of the societal burden of AD dementia, informing government and private research priorities and the development of the recently enacted National Alzheimer's Plan.
