When disaster strikes, it typically causes disruptions for the affected communities. Whether it's natural or man-made, it disrupts the fully-functioning life of the victims and brings loss for individuals, families and communities (Makwana, 2019). Individuals affected may feel a sense of panic and shock at the initial impact of a disaster, with the longstanding effects of hopelessness, anxiety, depression, and PTSD (Falkner, 2018). Thus, the need for spiritual care becomes imperative. Chaplains are very supportive for the communities' emotional needs during and after a disaster. There will be an internal struggle for healthcare providers because they are typically on the front lines during a disaster, the first witnesses to any devastation, and the first to be traumatized at times. Healthcare providers will also require spiritual support from one another or the people around them not only to regain motivation and strength, but also to become spiritually healthy again in the aftermath of a disaster, whether man-made or natural.

Community health nurses have had an important role in assisting in the spiritual care of the individual, community, self, and colleagues. Nurses must consider the psychological effects at these times to provide comfort and resources to those affected. During a disaster, a community health nurse's can provide spiritual support so that individualized care can be delivered with compassion (Makwana, 2019). Referrals to case management, chaplain services, social work, counseling services and other appropriate resources for mental health may be appropriate. Self-care is as equally important for nurses and other healthcare providers as they may fall victim to the psychological effects following the event. It is important not to put their own safety or the safety of others in jeopardy during times of crisis, therefore, it is crucial to be aware of their own emotional health and reach out for support when needed (Falkner, 2018).
