The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Text Revised (DSM - IV - TR) categorizes and defines criteria for diagnosing mental disorders. The most common categories and diagnoses are mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorder, schizophrenia, and addiction.

Addictive disorders are becoming increasingly pervasive. They include addictions to alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription medication, as well as food, compulsive gambling and a wide range of other substances and behaviors.
