Case Study - The function of managers: Role and skills

Instructions: You are required to analyse the following situation using the STAR method. Your response should be 750 words.

Instructions on how to use the S*T*A*R analysis technique for this case.

S*T*A*R stands for Situation, Theory, Action, Reflection. These form the headings for your analysis.

You should analyse this case from the perspective of the roles managers adopt, the different skills they are meant to display, and the functions they are required to perform within the organisation. That means identifying where Kim has performed some of these - but also where Kim has NOT displaying these requirements of managers.

Focus on the following for each section of your analysis - remember this is not a report so you should not use report format.

Situation: This is where you identify the issues that confront the manager of Front Office. Don't just list all the issues in a haphazard fashion - but put them under headings. For instance does Kim have Staff issues? If so what are these? Does Kim have issues with management? etc

Theory: In this section you should concisely outline the management theories that apply to this case. You should consider: Mintzberg: management roles, Katz: Skills required of managers and Fayol's: functions of management.

Action: In this section you should link the theories discussed above with the "actions" Kim took in the case. You should be looking for examples. For example, was there a time when she used her "technical skills (Katz)?" Were there examples of where Kim performed the functions of management correctly - or were there examples (actions) that indicate she had not?

Reflection: In this section you should review Kim's performance. In which areas (roles, functions and skills) did Kim perform adequately? Were there areas for improvement and what were these?

Reflection Has not identified relevant problems nor given solutions that relate to theory Has identified some good areas of performance by the manager while identifying areas for improvement. However may not venture any solutions. Has identified the core problems in terms of behaviours and offered solutions connected to theories. Explains why certain actions taken by manager were appropriate. Strong application of theory to both diagnosing problems and offering solutions As for Distinction but with excellent expression, clarity of thought with good linkage between ideas.

Theory Has not addressed the correct theories relevant to this case – or too superficial –lacking in content – poor expression Briefly mentioned some relevant theories But lacks depth and relevance to this case. May have expression errors. Has mentioned theories but may not reflect a deeper understanding In relation to the case. Might not focus on key theories. Minor expression errors Has concisely identified key elements of theories that are relevant to the case. Expression is good.
