Case Study - The function of managers: Role and skills
Instructions: You are required to analyse the following situation using the STAR method. Your response should be 750 words.
Instructions on how to use the S*T*A*R analysis technique for this case.
S*T*A*R stands for Situation, Theory, Action, Reflection. These form the headings for your analysis.
You should analyse this case from the perspective of the roles managers adopt, the different skills they are meant to display, and the functions they are required to perform within the organisation. That means identifying where Kim has performed some of these - but also where Kim has NOT displaying these requirements of managers.
Focus on the following for each section of your analysis - remember this is not a report so you should not use report format.
Situation: This is where you identify the issues that confront the manager of Front Office. Don't just list all the issues in a haphazard fashion - but put them under headings. For instance does Kim have Staff issues? If so what are these? Does Kim have issues with management? etc
Theory: In this section you should concisely outline the management theories that apply to this case. You should consider: Mintzberg: management roles, Katz: Skills required of managers and Fayol's: functions of management.
Action: In this section you should link the theories discussed above with the "actions" Kim took in the case. You should be looking for examples. For example, was there a time when she used her "technical skills (Katz)?" Were there examples of where Kim performed the functions of management correctly - or were there examples (actions) that indicate she had not?
Reflection: In this section you should review Kim's performance. In which areas (roles, functions and skills) did Kim perform adequately? Were there areas for improvement and what were these?
