Assessment: Case Study: Leading and Managing Project Teams
Learning Outcomes
Critically assess the key principles underlying strategic people management and explain how their implementation enhances organisational and individual performance.
Critically evaluate the relationships between effective people management, organisational performance, ethics and social justice.
Evaluate the effectiveness of different approaches to managing teams in a global environment
Context:
In this assessment, you are required to analyse a case study that describes an organisation facing the launch of several projects designed to address three specific goals.
Identifying and analysing leadership styles will help to prepare you for the management of the efforts of individuals who contribute to a project. This also introduces the concepts of power, and how the appropriate use of power can influence these efforts.
The Assignment:
Read the J & J Furnishings, Ltd. case study (Document: Module 4 Case Study [PDF]) and address the questions below.
You may complete this assignment individually, or in pairs. Individuals will submit an 1,800 word report. Pairs will submit a 2,500 word report, as well as a 10-20 slide PowerPoint presentation with embedded audio summarising their findings (one report and one presentation per pair).
Explain why you might choose one of the leadership styles discussed in this module's learning resources over another style when managing the highlighted project team.
Describe which tools and techniques discussed in the resources you might use as a project manager to influence this project team.
Explain which of the six types of power as described in Raven (2004) you would employ to:
- influence the project team;
- motivate the team members to work collaboratively, and;
- impact the project's success.
Explain your reasons for selecting these approaches.
Describe the steps you might take, as project manager, to alleviate challenges faced by your project team before those challenges grow so large that they damage the work environment or the final product. Explain why.
