Mrs. Z. is a 78-year-old widow who had total knee replacement surgery and was recently transferred to a rehab facility. Prior to the knee replacement, Mrs. Z. did not get much physical activity because of the pain she was experiencing. The goal in the rehab facility is to help her regain her strength so she will be able to go back to her home and live independently. Two days after her transfer, Mrs. Z. fell while trying to get out of bed to go to the bathroom by herself. She is now complaining of more intense pain in her surgical knee that requires stronger pain medication to provide comfort. She also does not want to participate in her physical therapy or get up to go to the bathroom because she is afraid of falling again. It has been 3 days since Mrs. Z. has had a bowel movement. She is showing signs of skin breakdown due to urinary incontinence.
