Project Scope Management

Objectives

• Understand the contribution that effective management of the 5 process groups makes to project success.
• Understand the typical level of activity for each process group and the interactions between them.
• Understand the elements that make good project scope management important.
• Discuss the scope definition process and create a work breakdown structure (WBS).
• Understand the importance of scope verification, and change control to avoid scope creep.

Question 4.1 - Process Groups
Complete the PMI Process Puzzle:

Identify the relationship between the PMBOK guide knowledge areas (in particular, scope management) and the process groups. Which process should take the project team the most time? Why?

Why is good project scope management so important on projects?

Question 4.3 - How Projects Work
Visit the attached website: Refer to the cartoon How Projects Really Work? What is the message this cartoon is trying to tell us?

Question 4.4 - Determining the Requirements

Visit the attached website: Refer to the article Questions - Defining Project Scope, and answer the following questions:
• What does Garrett (2008) say about determining the scope of a project?
• Does he ask the right questions?
• What do the respondents to Garrett's blog say?
• What can we learn from the ideas of these professionals?

Question 4.5 - Scope Statement
Read the case study Dog Shelter App (provided at the end of this document) and develop a project scope statement. Search the Internet for further ideas to improve your scope statement. For example, some scope statements include a list of key milestones, or acceptance criteria. A scope statement template is provided. Use this as a starting point.

Question 4.6 - WBS
Read the case study Dog Shelter App and develop a work breakdown structure, in tabular form. Corporate guides for creating project WBS's are to use the five project management process groups as level 1 headings. Each process group must have at least one major deliverable and break down the work to the third level for at least one of the items.

Read the case study Successful Scope Management(provided at the end of this document). Why is this case an example of successful project scope management?
