The Case of Lyall

Lyall is a 23-year-old born female who was recently admitted to hospital for an attempted drug overdose. Lyall was born to a middle-class family and raised in Cold Lake, Alberta. When speaking with Lyall, they mention they were born with the name 'Lilith' but have always preferred to be called Lyall. Lyall describes a lonely upbringing, as their parents desperately wanted a girl and refused to engage with Lyall unless they 'acted like a one.' Lyall did not have many friends growing up either, because they did not like the 'stereotypical girl things.' Lyall has one brother, Jordan, who used to let them dress up in his clothes., which made Lyall happy. However, Lyall expresses extreme sadness with how their life is and presents with very low self-esteem. Lyall says they hate the way they look and wish to be different. Lyall admits the attempted suicide was due to their 'desire to no longer look at themselves in this body.'

What might be going on for Lyall?
