Case Study - Azkaban Software , a small products and services company employs about 500 people , majority of them technical employees mainly software engineers and OA engineers , These are divided into various teams that work on the products and projects that the organization executes from time to time . Software Engineers were expected to develop programs with good quality . QA Engineer were expected to find bugs in those programs . Additionally they have support functions like Sales & Marketing , HR , Training Admin . The employees at Azkaban are assigned to long term projects . They are not rotated from one project to another and many complain of boredom . The timings are fixed - they have to report to work at 9 and they cant leave before 6. If there are onsite calls they have to take those calls from office as no facet of work is allowed to be conducted from home Employees do not get a say about how they spend their time or how they do their work everything is laid down clearly in the policy handbook . Employees are not allowed to take unplanned leaves and even logging into office late results in pay cuts . The employees are trained at the beginning of their career in Azkaban on proprietary Azkaban technologies but they are not encouraged to learn new technologies outside of the company . The pay at Azkaban is at equal to or better than the industry average.

There is a lot of attrition and many engineers choose to quit within the first year of joining . Those who have not quit , are not really working passionately and most work happens simply because they are paid for it. The managers meet regularly to discuss attrition but no specific action has been taken regarding the same.
