Could you please help me respond to the discussion below. Just three will do in any order
Admiral Cigarette (1897) - This film is basically an ad to promote smoking. Very famous public figures are portrayed in this film as to influence the viewers to buy these cigarettes. Celebrity endorsement is a technique that is still used all the time for commercials nowadays. With celebrities promoting their products, brands can increase awareness, trust and familiarity. Consumers feel more sympathetic towards a brand, if their products are promoted by a celebrity they admire or relate to.
The Great Train Robbery (1903) - In this narrative film the director decides to show the robbery at the beginning to increase viewers' eager to know what happens next. This is a common plot device used in nowadays film making to keep the audience at the edges of their seats.
Mutt and Jeff: On Strike (1920) - This film shows the usage of animation and real actors at the same time. In the early days cartoons did not hide their means of production. The figures are clearly just lines drawn with ink. Cross-cutting technique is used to give the audience the illusion that Mutt and Jeff are on the phone with their creator, making demands for a bigger cut of his profits. This is a very common technique to show conversing parties that are supposed to be in different areas, and it's used in just about every type of film involving conversations held over distance.
The Gilded Cage (1915) - it tells a story about two sisters, the pampered favorite and the mistreated stepdaughter, played by Stonehouse. The elder daughter is naïve about love and rejects a man that was offering her just that. She wanted to marry for wealth, and then she learns the error of her ways. The stepdaughter then finds love in the rejected suitor, finding her soul mate. This film has a plot of the saying "money does not mean happiness." The movie that I can compare this to is the movie Just Wright (2010). Which is about two sisters, one is materialistic, in good shape, and nice looking and the other is a little overweight but passionate and lovable. A basketball player meets both of them and falls in love with the materialistic one but, when he suffers a leg injury she abandons him. The older sister then helps him with the injury and he slowly falls in love with her.
Pathé News, No. 15-1922 is designed to show short video clips detailing many different news stories. To accomplish this, they use a title card to introduce each individual story before displaying a slightly edited montage with the occasional interjectory card commenting on the montage. This is honestly not something I have seen much in modern media other than the news. Both, this Pathe News and current news don't spend too much time on a single story. I guess this is their way of presenting all the news they have in the short time given to them.
