As a manager and leader, it is important to synthesize and adopt the learning into your professional path. The focus of your individual project is to create an individual development plan for the next 5-years (and beyond if possible). The goal of your project is to create a personal plan to help you become a more effective manager and leader as a result of your work within this program.
This project will include the following sections:
1. Evaluation / Assessment: Evaluate yourself as a manager and a leader. Based upon the concepts and principles we have covered in this course (and in your previous courses), how would you rate yourself as a manager? As a leader? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Conduct a personal SWOT analysis on yourself as a manager and a leader.
2. Direction: Answer the primary question - What do you want? Consider what you want to be or do as a manager and/or a leader in your career or life. Describe your desired outcomes, pathways, or directions you seek to follow in your role as a manager and/or leader and what you hope to accomplish as a result. If you are prepared to share your personal mission statement, please do so within this project.
3. Purpose: Describe your "why"...consider the purpose behind your direction or mission in management and/or leadership. Why do you seek this direction in your profession? What is the passion driving your development and goals?
4. Roadmap: Create your 5-year plan. Consider your long-term (5+ year), mid-term (2-4 year), and short-term or immediate goals (0-2 year) needed to accomplish your mission or direction. Be sure to:
a. Cascade your goals - identify how your short-term goals contribute to your mid-term goals, and mid-term support your long-term goals.
b. Break out your key areas to address, critical steps to take, and prioritization to accomplish your goals.
c. Identify timelines. You do not need to be too specific - there are many unknowns when it comes to your professional development goals. However, be as specific as you can.
d. Identify your support team. Who do you need to work with to accomplish your goals?
e. Consider the resources you need to accomplish your goals. What do you need to make this vision a reality?
5. Known / Unknown: With your overall draft in place, what do you know for sure? What don't you know? Consider what it will take for you to become more confident in your plan over time. For example:
a. Do you have the knowledge today to accomplish your goals? If not, what additional knowledge will you need to meet your goals?
b. Do you have the skills today to accomplish your goals? If not, what will you need to meet your goals?
c. Will you need a team to help you? If so, what kind of person or people will you need to help?
d. What don't you know yet? What will you need to find out?
6. Share any other aspect to make your plan complete. This is YOUR plan. Finish it up with what you need to make it complete and a useable document.
