Anthropologist Kevin A. Yelvington says movement is central to Caribbean people. Caribbean movement has largely been to the United States, Britain, and the rest of Europe--places that have a colonial history with the Caribbean region. Concomitant with movement to these countries has been racism, but one aspect of Caribbean society is the infusion of humor in daily life, which has helped to somewhat dull the effects of racism.

As author Patricia Mohammad states, "Humor allows the unpalatable to be evoked and easily digested. In the works assigned, Fire in Babylon (video), Anansi (video) and "The Cricket Match" (short story), the unpalatable is racism. Selvon uses humor to make racism palatable. How does he balance racism with the humor of the Algernon as the Anancy figure? Support your statements using specific examples and quotations from the story and the videos.

Make sure to read the short story, "The Cricket Match" in your textbook. It is the main point of analysis. Fire in Babylon and Anansi should only explain and amplify the points you make from the short story.
