Question
The Canadian healthcare system in its present state is not sustainable in the long term. New models of health care delivery and roles will need to be created to meet the increasing demands of rising healthcare costs, aging and diverse populations and the need for integration of health care delivery across home, hospital and community settings (Kitch, 2017). As well, the use of advancing technology, big data and artificial intelligence in healthcare settings and society is influencing the future role and practice of nurses. Booth (2016) outlines that human decision making and being physically present providing patient care are beginning to be replaced by artificial intelligence and automation. If nurses do not embrace technology and the changing times, they run the risk of being replaced or no longer perceived of being of value in the healthcare system of the future. Kitch (2017) describes the need for nurses to design models of care delivery that focus on seamless coordinated care across the healthcare continuum that is person-centered. While nurses may not be replaced in the future, we need to begin to generate new roles that maximize what nurses can and should be focusing on within an advancing technological environment and interprofessional environment. Formulate a post based on the readings, online presentation, videos, and content you have learned from the nursing leadership course to create new roles and focus for nurses in this changing healthcare environment with advancing technology and interprofessional leadership roles. Nurses often lack the belief that they can create their roles in driving effective solutions. Dream big, aim high, be bold and create new innovative roles for BScN nurses rather than the traditional "point of care" roles.
