Questions:
Can you recognize patterns, and results, of the forms of gender socialization addressed by these two videos? If so, please explain what they are, and how frequently you think that is the form of gender socialization may be taking place.
If not, please explain the kinds of gender socialization of boys and men you have seen and/or experienced that is different from that described in these two video clips, and how common you think such gender socialization is in our society.
According to both videos, and many sociologists, such socialization impacts boys and men very directly. In addition, according to sociological research, and both videos, many common norms regarding the socialization of men in our society relate to discounting, disrespect, abuse, and violence directed toward women. The videos relate to socialization but also relate to Chapter 4 as well as my lecture on families, which ends with a section on domestic violence.
Do you recognize the ideas of what it means to be a man that are described in these two videos? How widespread do you think such ideas are in today's society?
Do you see alternative forms of gender socialization as better possibilities? If so, what would they look like if put into action to socialize your own children, or children of those close to you? If not, why not?
