Now let's look at the role of Executive Leadership and the strategic vision. It is up to this leadership to create a sense of purpose for the organization and to communicate the vision, give the organization a road map to follow. Their enthusiasm and positive attitude will set the tone for the organization. The executive leaders are: CEO (chief executive officers), COO (Chief Operating Officers, CNO (Chief Nursing Officer) CIO Chief Information Systems Officer), VPs, AVPs and Directors.
Looking closer at the role of the CEO our authors Hunger, Wheelen, Hoffman, Bamford (2015) have this to say; "Chief executive officers with a clear strategic vision are often perceived to be dynamic and charismatic leaders. They have many characteristics of transformational leaders- leaders who provide change and movement in an organization by providing a vision for that change" (p. 59).
These CEOs are able to command respect as they have three characteristics;
- The CEO articulates a strategic vision for the organization.
- The CEO presents a role for other to identify with and to follow.
- The CEO not only communicates high performance standards; by also shows confidence in the followers' ability to meet these standards.
Can you define transformational leadership? Can you give a Health Care example of a transformational leader? What was their strategic vision? Have they been successful in communicating and organizing change?
