Question: Choose one country (could be the US) and one particular crime relevant for that country (local, international or transnational) (e.g. forced marriage in the United States; human trafficking in Thailand; girl gangs in Venezuela; domestic violence in the China). Then try to explain, using criminological theories (select one specific theory), why the crime is relevant for the particular country (context), why it has occurred in the first place (causal factors), and why it has increased or decreased over the years (change and statistics). Then, in the discussion, recommend solutions and ways in which a crime problem can be minimized and/or prevented.

Basic elements of the report:

In general, the research report should include the following headlines:

Introduction about the topic, its importance and the aims/objectives of the paper: What will you study and why?

Nature, Trends & Definition of the particular crime: This will involve tracking newspaper stories, statistics from government and non-government sources such as Home office reports, Australian Institute of Criminology, United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, United Nations, etc. Define the crime, explain the trends (increase/decrease) and why is this crime important for criminologists, the country you selected and the international community in general?

Theoretical Explanations: Explain briefly one theory that scholars have used to explain why the crime occurred in the first place and why is it difficult to minimize/prevent it. This will involve getting information from a variety of sources such as journal articles, books and UN reports. Provide examples to explain how the theory explains the crime. Refer to scholarly articles and studies.

You can select:
a. Crime theories
b. Criminality theories c. Critical theories

Conclusion/Discussion: Recommend and suggest ways in which the crime and its consequences may be minimized and/or prevent. Can the government enforce laws more forcefully? Will education and awareness help? Can better mechanisms for reporting crimes be put in place?
