A tire manufacturing company advertises that its XL600 tire lasts at least 60,000 miles. From history, the company knows the standard deviation of the tire life is 8,000 miles. A consumer group has noticed more and more complaints about the tire failing at less miles so it decides to conduct a Z test at the .05 level of significance to determine whether the tires last less than 60,000 miles. The consumer group samples 49 of the tires and finds the tires have a mean of life 55,000 miles. Based on the results of the test, can the consumer group report in its next publication that the tires last less than 60,000 miles?
