If for each of the fifty states we plot the paired data consisting of the average income of residents of the state and the number of foreign-born immigrants who reside in the state, then the data pairs will have a positive correlation. Can we conclude that immigrants tend to have higher incomes than native-born Americans? If not, how else could this phenomenon be explained?
