Case: Module 11 is about the ethical dilemmas and privacy protection issues inherent in business information systems. For this week's discussion question, we'll look at the ethical and privacy issues with a hypothetical University License Plate Recognition information system. This information system uses university faculty/student/staff data (such as name, address, car year/make/model) combined with the continual scanning of license plates on the university campus to enforce parking regulations.

This license/parking information can be useful for law enforcement, other University areas, and private businesses. For instance, law enforcement may want to see if a certain car/license plate is presently on campus or to verify the times and dates a certain car/license plate was on campus (and where it was parked). University faculty or staff may want to know if a student's car was parked at the Business Building on a certain day/time. Private businesses might want to know how many cars (or what types/year of cars) are parked at the dorms in order to target their marketing material. In this discussion post, briefly discuss the ethical and privacy issues inherent with the University License Plate Reader information system.

Consider such questions as to whether or not the University should provide (or sell) any of the information stored in this information system to:

1) law enforcement,

2) other University work centers or faculty/staff, and

3) private businesses.

You may want to discuss whether or not the University has an ethical responsibility to protect the privacy of students/faculty/staff information within this information system.
