1. A 21 yr old college student reports to the campus crisis center concerned about her recent alcohol use. She states she has recently been drinking 3-7 beers per week for the past month. Prior to this episode she had been drinking 2-4 beers per month.

She lives with her mother, has a good relationship, reports no medical health issues. Has an elevated cholesterol level which is being controlled by diet & exercise. She has never sought treatment before for her alcohol use.

2. A 37 yr old man is consuming 1 pint of rum daily for the past 6 months. He suffers from hypertension and depression. He is prescribed medications for both conditions but is non-compliant with taking these medications. He has minimal contact with family and has no stable living arrangements. What modality of treatment would you refer him to? Why?

3. A 28 yr old woman is newly sober for the past 3 months after completing an intensive outpatient recovery program. She wants to hang out with her co-workers at happy hour in a local club. She is anxious but goes out with them and orders a soda. She feels good that she was able to go out and not have an alcoholic drink.

The following week the same scenario plays out without her having an alcoholic beverage. Is she on the path to staying sober or on the road to relapse? Why?
