Question- The origin of red-bed sandstones, in which the grains are coated with minute amounts of hematite, Fe2O3, has long been controversial. A key question in the controversy is whether hematite is stable in water at low temperatures. Calculate whether hematite or goethite, FeO(OH), is stable in the presence of water at 25 oC and 1 bar (Gf (hematite) = -742.8 kJ/mol, Gf (goethite) = -488.55 kJ /mol, Gf (H2O) = -237.14 kJ /mol).
