Investigative Studies : Thermodynamics Laboratory

AIM : Running of High Speed diesel engines on Test Cycle E2 and determine the exhaust emissions at various loads.

Procedure:

The diesel engine should be started and allowed to warm up before placing any load on the engine. Gradually raise the RPM to 1800. Load the engine to 100% load, the dial reading should be 29.8 and the corresponding BHP will be 268. Allow the engine to run at this load for 15 minutes. Note down all the readings mentioned in the Cummins Engine Testing Data Sheet.

Next lower the engine load to 75%, when the dial reading should show 22.3 and the corresponding BHP should be 201.0. Maintain the RPM constant at 1800 and allow the engine to run at this steady for 15 minutes. Note down all readings in the testing data sheet.

Presentation of results:

Calculate the power, torque and brake specific fuel consumption ( SFOC) . Show one specimen calculation for each derived quantity,

1. Plot a graph of SFOC versus power ( SFOC should be in gms/kWhr)
2. Plot a graph of Load versus Emissions.
3. Plot a graph of Pmax versus Emission
4. Comment on your plots.
5. Visit the IMO website and briefly explain what do you understand by the E2 cycle.
6. Submission not to exceed 4 A4 sheets.
