Scenario -

7 storeys hotel has been designed in 2015 in Myanmar, Mandalay. You are working as a civil engineering project manager for a company based in the Myanmar, Mandalay area. The directors have asked you to oversee the planning approval, land purchase, site investigation and site preparation, design, construction, of a development for the project. The work, which your company is responsible for, is the construction of a new hotel which will have accommodation for 200 guests. The client requires the cheapest solution for the given project with the following details to keep excavation, fabrication and assembly costs to a minimum. According to the architectural details, two basements are going to be created with total height of 5 m. Note that, in addition to 5m excavation under the hotel, the land need to be cut to provide a flat surface to create green area and parkings (Fig. 2). Furthermore:

  • There are 12 trees with diameter of around 430 mm on the site
  • The soil can be classified as clay with slope stability of 43 degree
  • The ground water level is 5 meters under ground level
  • The mat foundation is used

The site plan, structural geometry and cross section of the land are given in Fig 1, 2, and 3. As you are a site engineer, you are required to carry out

  • Earthwork activities i.e. the most suitable equipment, numbers, and time of operation of each
  • Suitable methods and techniques used to create substructures
  • Suitable methods and techniques used to create superstructure
  • Identify the hazards associated with civil engineering activities.

In preparation for the work to start, you have been asked to produce a report on the methods and resources that you can use in the above project.

It is expected to provide a creative solution for all above activities and the use of sustainable methods that will enhance the functionality and operations of the development in the long run. Take in consideration life cycle costing and new technologies.

Submission and Presentation -

1. Understand the methods and techniques used in earthworks activities

  • Redraw the site plan and structural geometry with a suitable scale
  • Calculate the volumes of earthworks for different earthworks
  • Provide an overview of the types of earthmoving equipment that you can use on the project construction site. What measures will you employ to ensure that the equipment is used efficiently, effectively and economically? Support your answer with examples. Justify your solutions.
  • Calculate the number of earth moving equipment and time needs for the relevant earthworks and total time of preparation till foundation stage,
  • What methods and resources will you employ to ensure safe and productive operations in deep excavations and trenching for your project? Justify your choice. Support your answer with examples.
  • Define types of temporary works required to deal with stability and groundwater problems in the project.

2. Understand methods and techniques used to create substructures

  • What types of plant and equipment will you use in substructure and drainage activities in your project? Justify your choice. Support your answer with examples.
  • What techniques of installing piling systems and ground stabilization activities will you use in your project? Justify your choice. Support your answer with examples.
  • What methods and processes of constructing foundations including will you use in your project? Justify your choice. Describe the resources that you will use for the construction of foundations. Justify your choice.
  • Describe methods and resources that you will use in processes, undertaking drainage works including culverts and installing services in your project.

3. Understand the methods and techniques used to create superstructures

  • What types of plant and equipment will you use in the construction of superstructure your project? Justify your choice. Support your answer with examples.
  • What methods and resources will you use in undertaking the main forms of structural activities in you project? Include the use of concrete in its various forms as well as the use of structural steelwork. Provide relevant examples. Justify your choices.
  • What methods of falsework and formwork will you use in the superstructure activities in your project?
  • Provide examples. Justify your choice. What processes of concrete production, delivery and placement will you use in your project? Justify your choice.

4. Understand the hazards associated with civil engineering activities.

  • Identify and assess the hazards arising from the substructure activities.
  • Explain the legal framework of health, safety and welfare and the requirements of the current CDM Regulations.
  • Evaluate and justify the role of the planning coordinator who has been appointed to the project.

5. Be able to solve problems associated with civil engineering activities.

  • During the excavation works the contractor found that the sub-soil in a section of the site to be contaminated. All site activities were halted pending further investigations. Following the investigations it was found that the site was contaminated with caustic soda and from material linked to buried heavy fuel tanks. The client has asked for a design solution to the problem.
  • Produce a risk assessment for the above problem.
